The Morning Drive: Dolly’s Trans Moment

Mar 1st, 2006 by Will | 10

Dolly PartonIt is NO secret to anyone who reads this blog that I, like Berto, absolutely worship Dolly Parton. She’s a goddess; she’s a diva; she’s a drag queen . . . but mostly, she has a beautiful heart and spirit, one that our country could use a lot more of. Well, in the year of the queer, if such a thing is possible . . . maybe better “in the year of the straight people doing gay for pay and the occasional Oscar” . . . in that year, we have Miss Dolly nominated (and quite the favorite) for a Best Song Oscar for her “Travelin’ Thru“. The song, from the also-nominated film Transamerica (starring a fabulous Felicity Huffman) is beautiful. It opens with the same background drumbeat we know from “Two Doors Down” — which I think a good call on Miss Dolly’s part since “TDD” is so upbeat and party-friendly — and then moves into some great lyrics in which we’re all “crucified” and ultimately the trans-person can be “born again” . . .

Questions I have many, answers but a few
But we’re here to learn, the spirit burns, to know the greater truth
We’ve all been crucified and they nailed Jesus to the tree
And when I’m born again, you’re gonna see a change in me

God made me for a reason and nothing is in vain
Redemption comes in many shapes with many kinds of pain
Oh sweet Jesus if you’re listening, keep me ever close to you
As I’m stumblin’, tumblin’, wonderin’, as I’m travelin’ thru

I’m just travelin’, travelin’, travelin’, I’m just travelin’ thru
I’m just travelin’, travelin’, travelin’, I’m just travelin’ thru

Enjoy this morning’s tune everybody! I’ve still not seen Transamerica but I’m so looking forward to it. Maybe Christie will give us a little review here in a comment since that bitch has seen it! Check out the Sordid Radio for this and other fine songs . . .

“I’ve still not seen Transamerica” — but, honey, you’ve seen me… love, bucky

At the risk of pissing off others or inciting jealousy, I’m going to say that Lil’ Bucky is one of the most amazing people I’ve ever met in my life. Of all the people I’ve met in G’vegas, you’re hands-down at the top of my list of the best people: you have a wonderful spirit, a beautiful heart — you even give Dolly a run for her money in that regard!

Of course, seeing you is not enough, Bucky. I love your strong hugs and the kind words you always have for me! Maybe I’ll start a “Lil’ Bucky Fan Club” on Facebook — I think there would be lots of folks just clamoring to join . . .

Will, I think this song is particulary appropriate for Ash Wednesday.

It seems to really speak to the idea of reflection and deep spiritual understanding that comes during the lenten season.

Christie, look at how hateful Will is towards you…calling you a bitch all the time. You should move to Atlanta. You’ll be treated a lot better here.
